MANAGUA, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Nicaragua on Monday announced its immediate withdrawal from the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), saying the regional body has failed to fulfill the goals for which it was created.

"We have respectfully notified the board of directors of the Central American Parliament of the immediate termination of our membership agreement with that body," Nicaraguan co-president Rosario Murillo said.

Murillo questioned the forum's effectiveness, saying it had failed to reach agreements that would improve the lives of Central American families.

In a statement, Nicaraguan deputies to Parlacen expressed their "full support for the sovereign decision ... to withdraw from the Constituent Treaty of the Central American Parliament and other political bodies." ■
