BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Kevin Gutierrez and Gaston Veron scored first-half goals as Argentinos Juniors showed its title credentials with a 2-1 home win over Tigre in Argentina's Clausura tournament on Sunday.
Gutierrez put the hosts ahead with a long-range effort after combining with Matias Gimenez, and Veron doubled the advantage when he latched onto Sebastian Prieto's cross with a header into the top-left corner.
Tigre had the chance to pull a goal back just before halftime but Jabes Saralegui's tame penalty attempt was saved by Gonzalo Siri.
Saralegui made amends shortly after the restart by providing the pass for Jeronimo Domina's goal, but the hosts defended resolutely thereafter to notch their sixth win of the campaign.
The Buenos Aires outfit has a two-point lead over second-placed Belgrano in Zone B while Tigre is 11th, nine points off the pace.
In other Argentine top-flight matches on Sunday, Huracan won 1-0 at home to Aldosivi, Belgrano prevailed 1-0 at Talleres and Racing edged to a 2-1 win at Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto. ■
