COLOMBO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Hambantota International Port (HIP) in Sri Lanka has surpassed 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in cumulative container throughput since new quay cranes were commissioned in 2025, said the port's operator, Hambantota International Port Group, in a Monday press release.
HIP handled 428,036 TEUs in 2025, while throughput reached 574,196 TEUs so far in 2026, taking the combined total to 1,002,232 TEUs.
The port is expanding its container-handling infrastructure to sustain growth, adding new equipment, boosting berth capacity, enlarging container-yard space and expanding reefer facilities, alongside upgrades to accommodate larger container vessels.
HIP is targeting an annual container-handling capacity of 2 million TEUs following the planned expansion. ■
