SARAJEVO, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Denis Becirovic, Zeljka Cvijanovic and Darijana Filipovic led the race for seats in Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH's) tripartite presidency, according to preliminary results released Sunday by the Central Election Commission.

The results were based on ballots from about 92 percent of the polling stations.

Becirovic of the Social Democratic Party of BiH (SDP) led the race for the Bosniak seat. Born in Tuzla in 1975, he has served in cantonal and federal parliaments and completed three terms as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly.

Cvijanovic of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) led the race for the Serb seat. Born in Teslic in 1967, she previously held government positions in Republika Srpska, mainly in international cooperation and European integration.

Filipovic of the Croatian Democratic Union of BiH (HDZ BiH) led the race for the Croat seat in her first presidential bid. Born in Mostar in 1987, she is party vice president and a member of the national parliament's House of Representatives.

Under the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, BiH consists of two entities: the Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska. General elections are held every four years. According to the country's electoral system, voters in the Federation of BiH elect the Bosniak and Croat members of the presidency, while voters in Republika Srpska elect the Serb member. All three serve four-year terms.

The 2026 elections are the ninth general elections held in BiH since 1996, when the Dayton Peace Agreement ended the 1992-1995 war and established the country's post-war constitutional order. ■
