MADRID, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Two people died and another remained missing after torrential rains and flooding hit Spain's northeastern Catalonia region, authorities said on Sunday.
In Tordera on the Costa Brava, a man was killed after a wall collapsed on him while he was clearing water from his bungalow at a campsite, Salvador Illa, president of the Generalitat, or Catalan regional government, said.
"Unfortunately, we must report a fatality in Tordera," Illa said, urging people to exercise extreme caution and follow official instructions as severe weather conditions persisted.
Another person died in Montornes del Valles, while emergency services were searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar, about 52 km north of Barcelona, firefighters said.
Catalan authorities issued a red weather alert and urged people to remain indoors from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon, as more heavy rain was forecast.
Homes were flooded and cars submerged in Bellvitge and Cornella, near Barcelona. Flights at Barcelona airport were cancelled or delayed, according to local media.
Local train services were also disrupted by the torrential rain. Shops closed early, football matches were called off and a performance of Verdi's "Aida" at Barcelona's Liceu opera house was cancelled. ■
