ABUJA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Twenty people were killed and five others injured in a crash involving four vehicles in Nigeria's central Plateau State, a road safety official said Saturday.
The incident occurred along the Hawan-Kibo-Jos road, a major highway in the country's central region, on Friday afternoon, Osondu Ohaeri, national spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, told Xinhua by telephone.
Citing a preliminary investigation, Ohaeri said the crash was caused by "brake failure and loss of control."
A total of 25 people were involved in the incident, he said, adding that the five injured had been taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Some witnesses said a passenger bus lost control while descending a hill in the area and rammed into other vehicles, including a truck.
Fatal road accidents are common in Nigeria and are often attributed to speeding, overloading, poor road conditions and reckless driving. ■
