TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Friday that its forces had smashed a "terrorist" team in a surprise operation in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, killing two of its members.

In a statement published on its official news outlet Sepah News, the IRGC said the operation was carried out after its intelligence forces identified members of the team hiding in the highlands west of Rask County.

It added that a manhunt was underway for the remaining members of the team, which it said had killed an IRGC member and attacked a checkpoint in Rask County.

The IRGC said that the team had planned to assassinate local security personnel in the province in the coming days, and that a Starlink device, weapons and "terrorist equipment" were found at the "terrorists' hideout."

In another statement published on Sepah News on Friday, the IRGC said an Iranian security officer was killed by a roadside bomb planted by "terrorists" along a road in Sistan and Baluchestan.

Sistan and Baluchestan, a province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has witnessed recurring clashes involving Iranian security forces, militants and drug traffickers as well as several terrorist attacks on both civilians and security forces in recent years. ■
