HONG KONG, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government announced Friday that the minimum allowable wage for foreign domestic helpers (FDHs) in Hong Kong will be increased by 2.35 percent to 5,220 Hong Kong dollars (about 665.22 U.S. dollars) per month.
The new minimum wage level will apply to all FDH contracts signed on or after Oct. 3. The food allowance in lieu of free food will remain unchanged at not less than 1,236 Hong Kong dollars per month.
In reviewing the wage level, the HKSAR government said it followed an established mechanism, consulting both employers and helpers while taking into account Hong Kong's economic and labor conditions, near-term outlook, employer affordability, and the basic living needs of FDHs. ■
