SANAA, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi group said Tuesday that Saudi warplanes carried out 35 airstrikes across five Yemeni provinces over the past 24 hours, as fighting continued between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces on several fronts.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement on social media platform X that the Saudi strikes targeted areas in the Yemeni provinces of Taiz, Al-Jawf, Amran, Saada and Hodeidah.
Sarea said F-15 and Typhoon jets flying from air bases in the Saudi cities of Khamis Mushait and Taif carried out the strikes, which he said hit civilian infrastructure, including telecommunication facilities and schools.
The latest attacks brought the number of Saudi airstrikes and missile attacks since the current escalation began to 1,158, he added.
Saudi Arabia has yet to comment on the latest Houthi claims.
Meanwhile, Majid al-Nuzaili, spokesperson for the government forces, warned in a statement on X on Tuesday that civilians should stay away from sites used by the Houthis for military activities.
The warning came as fighting continued in southwestern Yemen, with the two sides trading attacks in Lahj province, which overlooks the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, and on several fronts in neighboring Taiz province.
Fighting has intensified across southwestern Yemen recently after the group seized the strategic port city of Mocha and Mayyun Island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait earlier this month.
Yemen's conflict began in late 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government. ■
