NAGOYA, Japan, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Zhang Shuai and Wang Xiyu advanced to the women's singles semifinals and Wu Yibing reached the men's singles quarterfinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games here on Wednesday.
In the women's singles quarterfinals, fourth-seeded Wang battled past Japan's Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
"Representing my country at the Asian Games is a great opportunity for me. The matches will get tougher from here, but I hope I can stay determined and take it one step at a time," said Wang, who is competing at the Asian Games for the first time.
Wang will face top-seeded Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in the semifinals. Eala defeated Chinese Taipei's Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-0 in her quarterfinal.
"It was a really close first set, a lot of breaks and some good hitting. A lot of deuces as well. So maybe I just had my way in the important points and I got a couple more," Eala said after the match.
In the other women's singles quarterfinal, second-seeded Zhang beat Japan's Himeno Sakatsume 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last four.
In the men's singles second round, China's Wu Yibing cruised past Indonesia's Muhammad Rifqi Fitriadi 6-1, 6-2.
In men's doubles, China's Zhang Tianhui and Jiang Fumin edged top-seeded India's Anirudh Chandrasekar and Balaji Narayanaswamy in a deciding match tiebreak, winning 10-8 after the teams split the first two sets 1-1, to advance to the semifinals.
"In the tiebreaks, and in the match tiebreak, it was very tense. We are the young ones, and we were the ones going at them. When it comes down to moments that tight, anybody can make a mistake. The two of us gripped it a little tighter. Our opponents may be ranked in the top 100 (ATP Rankings), but we still had to believe in ourselves," Zhang said.
China's Jiang Xinyu and Yang Zhaoxuan, and Zhang Shuai and Guo Hanyu advanced to the women's doubles quarterfinals, while Wu Yibing and Guo Hanyu reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals. ■
