BUDAPEST, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's parliament on Monday rejected President Andras Baka's nominee for prosecutor general, with none of the 139 lawmakers taking part in a secret ballot voting in favor of the candidate.
A total of 138 lawmakers voted against Zoltan Szathmary's nomination, while one abstained. Following the vote, Baka said he respected parliament's decision and would nominate a new candidate as soon as possible.
"Now it is my turn to put forward a new candidate as soon as possible, and I will do so," Baka said, adding that he would seek someone capable of carrying out the necessary renewal of the prosecution service.
Baka said the parliamentary rejection did not make Szathmary, who previously held senior positions within Hungary's prosecution service, professionally unsuitable and described the result not as a failure but as an example of democracy functioning. ■
