BAGHDAD, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Two Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in a security operation in Iraq's northern province of Kirkuk, the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) said Sunday.
The CTS said in a statement that its forces clashed with three IS militants during the operation, killing two of them and capturing the third.
Separately, a civilian woman was killed when security forces fired two mortar rounds toward suspected IS movements late Saturday in Kirkuk province in northern Iraq, according to a statement on Sunday by the Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.
It said that security forces had spotted two IS militants in the area, unintentionally striking the civilian who later died of her injuries in the hospital.
While Iraq declared victory over IS in 2017, the group's remnants continue to carry out attacks against security forces and civilians in cities, deserts and remote areas. Authorities have intensified aerial and ground campaigns against suspected IS militants. ■
