Trump says rejected Iran's conditional proposal on reopening Hormuz Strait
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he has rejected a conditional proposal by Iran concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
"We have total control of the Hormuz Strait. Massive amounts of oil are coming out of the Hormuz Strait. Last night, we had 29 ships come out," Trump told journalists at the White House.
"They want to make a deal, and I think that's fine. I like making a deal too, but that deal would not be acceptable," he added.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi told reporters at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York that Iran had conveyed to the United States through Qatar a "concrete" plan under which the strait can be reopened within seven days if necessary conditions are met.
Iran's FM says over 5,000 people killed in U.S., Israeli attacks
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has said more than 5,000 people, including hundreds of women and children, were killed in the U.S. and Israeli "aggression" against Iran, Iranian media reported early Saturday.
In his remarks at a press briefing in New York, Araghchi listed some of the civilian targets struck in the U.S. and Israeli attacks as residential areas, schools, hospitals, energy facilities, sports and cultural complexes and transportation infrastructure, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
Araghchi emphasized that the assassinations of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and a number of the country's senior political and military officials were "flagrant crimes and in violation of international law," said the report.
China, U.S. reach consensus on eight outcomes in Xi's visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, have reached a consensus on eight outcomes, according to a release made public after Xi wrapped up his U.S. visit on Friday.
The two leaders have agreed to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity, said the release.
They also agreed to support each other as China will host the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in November and the United States will host the G20 Leaders' Summit in December, expressing intention that they will attend each other's event.
On Iran, Xi and Trump have agreed that Tehran should fulfill its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons. No country or institution shall charge transit fees for passage through international waterways, they said.
12 al-Shabab militants killed in Somali operation: intelligence agency
Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said it killed 12 al-Shabab militants in an operation in the south-central part of the country, according to a statement issued on Friday evening.
NISA said the operation targeted a gathering site in Bur Saruur village, roughly 2 km southeast of the Ali-Gaduud area in the Middle Shabelle region, destroying hideouts and military equipment.
"The operation went as planned, while the remaining al-Shabab militants are still being tracked down," the intelligence agency said in the statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
Somali government forces, backed by international partners, have intensified their military campaign against al-Shabab across the central and southern regions.
Yemeni gov't forces say airstrikes hit Houthi reinforcements in Taiz, casualties reported
Yemeni government forces said Saturday that warplanes struck Houthi supply lines, reinforcements, and weapons depots across the southwestern province of Taiz, leaving dozens of fighters killed or wounded as fighting intensifies on several fronts.
In a statement on social media platform X, the Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center cited a government military source as saying that warplanes struck a Houthi supply convoy on Al-Sitteen Street, north of Taiz city, scoring "direct hits."
The strikes also targeted Houthi reinforcements in Al-Wazi'iyah district in western Taiz province, as well as weapon depots in Mawiyah area in the east, the source said.
The strikes destroyed several vehicles and left dozens of Houthi fighters killed or wounded, including field commanders, the source said, though the claims could not be independently verified.
Bangladesh launches catch-up measles-rubella vaccination drive amid outbreak
The Bangladeshi government has launched a nationwide special vaccination campaign as the country steps up efforts to contain the measles outbreak, which continues unabated.
Bangladeshi Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated the campaign in Dhaka on Saturday with the aim of vaccinating 3.4 million children.
Earlier vaccination rounds that began in April have administered measles-rubella vaccines to 18.5 million children.
Bangladesh recorded 980 new suspected measles cases and three more suspected measles deaths between 8 a.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday, the country's health authority said.
Over 2,900 families forced to evacuate amid Cambodia floods
Flooding has affected 25,561 families across Cambodia, forcing 2,908 families to evacuate to higher ground, a disaster control spokesperson said on Saturday.
Soth Kim Kolmony, spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), said that 10 provinces have been hit by the deluge. The rising waters have also inundated 24,505 homes and 12,551 hectares of rice paddies.
According to Kolmony, the current flooding is primarily driven by heavy rainfall rather than a Mekong River overflow.■
