KAMPALA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Host Uganda reached the Cup semifinals of the World Rugby SVNS 3 Africa Qualifiers after securing two wins on the opening day of the tournament here on Saturday.
The Uganda Rugby Cranes made a strong start at the Kyadondo Rugby Ground in Kampala, defeating Senegal 38-0 before beating Tunisia 26-10 in their Group B matches.
With two wins from two matches, Uganda has secured a place in the semifinals and will face Zambia on Sunday in a match that will determine the group winner.
Uganda captain Ian Munyani told Xinhua that the team was pleased with its opening-day performance and with securing a place in the semifinals.
"We take every match like a final, and we are determined to play well and keep winning," Munyani told Xinhua.
He said the match against Tunisia was particularly challenging because the opponent played a highly tactical game.
In other matches, Nigeria defeated Ghana 28-5 in an all-West African encounter, while Zimbabwe edged Morocco 19-12.
Zambia also secured two wins, beating Tunisia 10-7 and Senegal 17-14.
Zimbabwe, with two wins, has also advanced to the semifinals, while Sunday's matches will determine whether Nigeria and Morocco join the four-team knockout stage.
The tournament winner will qualify as Africa's representative for the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3. ■
