CAIRO, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council Rashad al-Alimi on Friday discussed the latest developments in Yemen and ongoing efforts to restore security and stability during a phone call.
Sisi reiterated Egypt's commitment to maintaining its support for Yemen and its people, confirming the vital importance of preserving the unity of the Yemeni state and its national institutions, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
The Egyptian president also reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast position in support of all efforts aimed at reinforcing security and stability and reaching a comprehensive political settlement that fulfills the aspirations of the Yemeni people.
For his part, al-Alimi lauded Egypt's supportive role in safeguarding Yemen's stability and territorial integrity, and valued Egypt's steadfast position toward the Yemeni people.
During their call, the two sides emphasized the necessity to continue consultations and coordination between the two countries on various regional issues.
Earlier in the day, al-Alimi called for national mobilization and urged the Yemeni people to rally behind the armed forces and security forces, while offering a "safe return" to those who abandon the Houthi group.
Yemen's conflict erupted in late 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government. ■
