BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. China claims first gold at Aichi-Nagoya Asiad in modern pentathlon
China defended its women's team gold medal in modern pentathlon to secure the first gold medal for the Chinese delegation at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 20.
The women's individual and team events were held in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture. In the individual event, South Korea's Seong Seung-min won with 1,492 points. China's Zhang Mingyu took silver with 1,460 points, while her compatriot Wu Xiyao won bronze with 1,447 points.
Another Chinese competitor, Meng Xin, finished fifth with 1,411 points, while Fu Jing placed eighth with 1,389 points.
Under Asian Games rules, the team result is determined by the combined scores of each team's top three finishers. China topped the women's team standings with 4,318 points, edging South Korea on 4,271, to claim its first gold at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The event marked the first appearance of modern pentathlon at the Asian Games with obstacle replacing equestrian, and served as a preview of the event's new format for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
2. China reaches 100-gold mark with women's 50m rifle 3 positions team title
China reached the 100-gold mark at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 26 as its shooters swept both women's 50m rifle three positions titles.
The milestone came when Han Jiayu, Zhang Liyuan and Wang Zifei defended China's title in the team event with 1,773 points, one point shy of the world record. Han led the team with 594 points, followed by Zhang on 591 and Wang on 588. India took silver with 1,763 points, while Kazakhstan finished third with 1,754.
Han then added the individual title, edging teammate Zhang by 0.2 points in a close finish.
3. Zhang Zhanshuo seals record seven-gold haul as China finishes with 30 titles in swimming at Asian Games
On the closing night of the swimming program at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, China's Zhang Zhanshuo capped a remarkable campaign by winning the men's 400m freestyle on September 25, becoming the first swimmer to win seven gold medals at a single edition of the Games.
The 19-year-old clocked 3 minutes 41.28 seconds, breaking the Asian Games record, to complete a clean sweep of seven of the eight events he entered. His haul also matched the Asian Games record for most gold medals won by an athlete at a single edition, set by DPR Korean shooter So Gil-san in 1982.
Zhang's seven golds came in the men's 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle, as well as the men's 4x200m free, 4x100m free and mixed 4x100m medley relays.
China finished the swimming program with 30 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals.
4. China reaches Asian Games men's football semifinal after 28-year wait
China reached the semifinal of the men's football tournament at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games for the first time in 28 years after beating Thailand 3-0 in the quarterfinal on September 26.
Peng Xiao forced an own goal before Hu Hetao and Zhang Yuning added a goal apiece as China secured a convincing victory and booked a semifinal clash on September 30 against South Korea, which advanced to the last four with a 4-0 victory over Vietnam.
China finished with 16 shots, 12 of them on target, while Thailand managed eight shots, with only two on target.
5. China beats Maldives in football friendly
China beat the Maldives 3-0 in the opening match of the CFA Team China International Football Competitions Chongqing on September 24, with Wang Ziming scoring a second-half hat-trick.
Neither side found the net in the first half, as China struggled to find its rhythm, managing nine shots with only two on target.
China made nine changes after the break and quickly found the breakthrough. In the 50th minute, substitute Wang Shangyuan threaded a through ball to Wang Ziming, who raced clear and fired a low shot into the net.
Six minutes later, substitute Chen Pu delivered a cross for Wang Ziming to head home for his second.
Wang completed his hat-trick on the hour mark, applying a deft finish near the six-yard box after Wang Gengrui's cross from the flank. ■
