SYDNEY, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- A boy who was shot at a home in northwest Sydney on Monday evening has died from his injuries in hospital, New South Wales police said.
Emergency services were called to reports of a shooting at a residential unit in northwest Sydney around 5 p.m. on Monday and arrived to find an 11-year-old boy had sustained a gunshot wound to his face and neck.
He was hospitalized in a critical condition, but police said they were notified of his death around 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Five other people present at the time of the incident were uninjured. Three 18-year-old men were arrested at the scene by police, one of whom was charged with concealing a serious indictable offense.
Local newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald, reported that investigators believe the boy may have accidentally shot himself while handling an illegal gun, but have not ruled out the possibility that someone else accidentally fired the gun.
Police initially said the incident was not linked to organized crime, but Superintendent Naomi Moore told reporters on Tuesday that detectives were investigating whether the men present at the time had criminal links.
She said that some of the people present were not cooperating with investigators and police had not yet located the firearm involved. ■
