VIENNA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Former Austrian President Heinz Fischer spoke highly of China-Austria relations during a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, saying that the two countries enjoy strong economic ties and positive public perceptions.
Speaking to Xinhua on Thursday evening, Fischer said his assessment of bilateral relations was "very positive." Fischer said the bilateral economic ties are very close, noting that China is currently Austria's third-largest trading partner worldwide.
He also highlighted what he described as good "psychological relations" between the two countries, saying that China has "a good name in Austria".
"We are different, but China is a peaceful country. China is interested in peace," he said, adding that this is important for public opinion in Austria as well as for the Austrian government. "We have different opinions on some issues, but we know that China is a reliable partner," he said.
More than 600 people attended the reception, including diplomats, heads of international organizations, and representatives from various sectors in both countries. ■
