KINSHASA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- More than 10 people were killed after a small passenger plane crashed and caught fire Friday in Kenge, the capital of Kwango Province in southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local media reported, citing provincial authorities.
The aircraft, a Let L-410 UVP Turbolet, crashed after encountering difficulties while attempting to land, according to the provincial government.
Kwango Vice Governor Remy Saki said the body of the pilot was recovered outside the wreckage, while several passengers were believed to have been burned to death after the aircraft was engulfed in flames.
Saki said the aircraft had circled over Kenge several times in search of a place to land before crashing into a residential compound. "Fortunately, none of the occupants of the compound were harmed," Saki was quoted as saying.
Authorities said military personnel were among those aboard the aircraft. Saki called for an expert investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of the crash. ■
