ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A suspected U.S. drone strike hit a vehicle carrying two suspected members of al-Qaeda in Yemen's southeastern Hadramout province on Tuesday evening, killing one and wounding the other, a local security official told Xinhua.
The strike targeted the vehicle as it was traveling through Brom Mayfa district, west of Mukalla, the provincial capital of Hadramout, the official said on condition of anonymity.
The vehicle was believed to belong to the Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the official said. The identities of those targeted were not immediately known.
There was no immediate statement from AQAP regarding the reported strike.
AQAP has exploited years of conflict and weakened state authority to maintain a presence in remote parts of southern and eastern Yemen.
The country's conflict erupted in late 2014 when the Houthi group seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene the following year in support of the internationally recognized government. ■
