SANAA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi group said Tuesday that Saudi warplanes carried out 19 airstrikes across three Yemeni provinces over the past 24 hours, while Houthi-run media reported at least 17 killed and 11 wounded in recent strikes.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement on social media platform X that the strikes targeted the southwestern province of Taiz, the northern province of Al-Jawf, and the northeastern oil-rich province of Marib.
Sarea said Saudi F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets operating from air bases in Khamis Mushait and Taif carried out the attacks, causing deaths and injuries.
He added that the latest attacks brought the Houthi-reported tally of Saudi air and missile attacks since the current escalation began to 936, warning that Saudi Arabia would face "dire" consequences.
The figures could not be independently verified.
Separately, Houthi-run media and officials said the strikes from Monday night through Tuesday had killed at least 17 people and wounded 11 others.
Abdul Qader al-Murtada, head of the Houthis' prisoner affairs committee, said in a statement on X that nine detainees were killed when a Saudi airstrike hit a prison in Al-Hazm, the provincial capital of Al-Jawf, on Monday night.
In another incident in Al-Jawf, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported that a woman and her child were killed in Saudi airstrikes, with her husband and two other family members wounded.
Earlier Tuesday, al-Masirah reported that three Saudi airstrikes hit a residential house in the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha in Taiz, killing six people, including two children and a woman, and wounding eight others.
There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia on the Houthi claims.
The strikes came amid an escalating confrontation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with Saudi airstrikes targeting Houthi-held areas across Yemen and the group launching missiles and drones at targets deep into the kingdom.
Yemen's conflict erupted in late 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government. ■
