ANKARA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A teenage boy has been arrested and taken into custody after at least 11 people were injured in a shooting outside a high school in Türkiye's western province of Manisa on Tuesday morning, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said.
The incident occurred in front of Inci Uzmez Anatolian Technical High School in the Turgutlu district at around 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), leaving 11 students injured, two of them seriously. The teenage suspect opened fire indiscriminately outside the school building, with the motive remaining unclear.
Law enforcement and medical personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, and a comprehensive investigation was launched, Türkiye's Ministry of National Education said in a statement. Three inspectors from the ministry were also dispatched to Manisa province following the shooting, the statement said.
In a post on social media platform X, Gurlek said authorities were conducting a thorough, multifaceted investigation into how the weapon used in the attack came into the suspect's possession, how it had been stored, the parents' duties of care and supervision, and allegations of peer bullying prior to the incident.
Türkiye has witnessed a series of deadly school attacks in recent months. On April 14, an armed attack at a school in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa left 16 people injured. On April 15, nine people were killed in a school shooting in the southern province of Kahramanmaras. ■
