OSLO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Eritrea's Dawit Seare and Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw won the men's and women's 5km titles respectively at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on Saturday.
Seare overtook Olympic 5,000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the closing stages to win in an Eritrean record of 12 minutes 56 seconds. The Norwegian, racing on his 26th birthday, took silver in a national record of 12:59, while Eritrea's 19-year-old Saymon Amanuel claimed bronze in 13:00.
In the women's race, Amebaw pulled away from Kenya's Caroline Gitonga at the 4km mark and won in 14:41, six days after taking the 5,000m title at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
Gitonga finished second in 14:48, with Australia's Rose Davies securing bronze in an Oceanian record of 14:50.
Ethiopia also won the 5km mixed team title, ahead of Australia and Kenya.
The championships, being held for the second time after the inaugural event in Riga, Latvia, in 2023, feature men's and women's races over the mile, 5km and half marathon. Competition concludes with the half marathons on Sunday. ■
