Trump claims deal with Denmark, Greenland giving U.S. control over security in Greenland
U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving the United States "permanent control" over security and other needs in Greenland.
"At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
"We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many," he said.
Trump says CNN, MS NOW, Politico banned from White House, citing alleged fake news
U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that CNN, MS NOW (previously known as MSNBC) and Politico were banned from the White House "effective immediately," citing what he called fake news in a post on Truth Social.
Trump accused the three outlets of repeatedly publishing what he called false or fabricated reports about him, his administration and the United States, and warned that other media organizations could face similar restrictions.
"Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America," Trump said, adding "Other Fake News Media Outlets" will follow.
Russia's easternmost regions begin voting for 9th State Duma
Elections for deputies to the ninth convocation of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, have kicked off across Russia, with the first polling stations opening in the country's easternmost regions.
Polling stations in Kamchatka Krai and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug opened at 8 a.m. local time Friday (2000 GMT Thursday).
Under a decision by Russia's Central Election Commission, voting will be held over three days, from Sept. 18 to 20.
Russia protests U.S. Typhon deployment in Japan
Russia has demanded that Japan remove the U.S. Typhon systems from its territory, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.
"On September 3, a note of protest was sent to the Japanese side in Moscow and Tokyo in connection with the deployment of U.S. ground-based Typhon systems, designed for launching intermediate- and shorter-range missiles, on the island of Kyushu," said Zakharova in a statement.
She further said that the deployment of Typhon launchers on Japanese territory was unacceptable under any pretext and demanded their removal.
Cuba suffers another nationwide blackout
Cuba suffered another nationwide blackout on Friday after its national power grid completely collapsed, state utility Union Electrica (UNE) said.
UNE said the cause was under investigation and procedures to restore power were underway. Power outages had earlier been reported across western Cuba, from Pinar del Rio to Matanzas.
Cuba has suffered repeated nationwide blackouts since October 2024, amid fuel shortages and problems with its aging power infrastructure.
Iran's IRGC says "violating" oil tanker hit in Hormuz Strait
The navy of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Friday a "violating" oil tanker that sought "illegal" passage through the Strait of Hormuz was struck the previous night and brought to a halt.
In a statement published on the IRGC's official news outlet Sepah News, the navy said the Togo-flagged oil tanker, named "Trend," was stopped after it caught fire following the strike.
The vessel attempted to cross the strait "illegally" after being "deceived and provoked" by the U.S. Army, it said, warning that attempting illegal passage through the waterway will lead to nothing but "destruction."
Yemen's Houthis report 300 Saudi airstrikes this week
Yemen's Houthi group said Friday that Saudi warplanes launched 26 airstrikes on the southwestern province of Taiz over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of strikes across Yemen this week to 300 as air operations intensified alongside ongoing ground battles on several fronts.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement on social media platform X that Saudi F-15 fighter jets carried out the 26 strikes on Taiz after taking off from Khamis Mushait Air Base in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
16 killed in twin suicide attack in NW Pakistan
At least 16 people were killed and over 50 others injured in a twin suicide attack inside a residential compound of police in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, police and rescue officials said.
The incident happened in Kohat district, where one of the bombers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a mosque adjacent to the gate of the compound before detonating it, Inspector General of Police of the province Zulfiqar Hameed told the media.
Another bomber blew himself up near a building housing offices of the special branch of police, he added.■
