YANGON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar held a ceremony marking World Bamboo Day at the Forest Department in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday, Myanma Alinn reported on Saturday.
During the ceremony, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Hsan Oo said bamboo production contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of eradicating poverty and ensuring food security, while bamboo is also a natural resource that helps communities adapt to climate change and supports forest restoration and watershed conservation.
This year's World Bamboo Day, themed "Bamboo Beyond Borders," aims to raise public awareness of the economic benefits of bamboo resources, promote bamboo-based industrial and handicraft businesses, encourage the sustainable and systematic use of bamboo for environmental conservation, and increase public knowledge and awareness of bamboo, he said.
The union minister said that, to develop the bamboo sector, bamboo extraction from natural forests should be carried out based on sustainable forest management practices. ■
