OSLO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Norway and Italy discussed ways to strengthen cooperation on European security, competitiveness and strategic industries during Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's visit to Oslo on Thursday.

Meloni and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store discussed the conflict in Ukraine and security in the High North, as well as deeper cooperation in critical raw materials, energy, space activities, and the defence and maritime industries, the Norwegian government said in a press release.

"At a time of growing geopolitical instability, Europe needs more cooperation on security, preparedness, energy and economic development," Store said.

"Norway and Italy stand together in strengthening Europe's security and competitiveness," he added.

Store described Italy as an increasingly important partner for Norway and a key market for Norwegian businesses. He said the two countries wanted to expand cooperation in areas where their interests and expertise complement each other.

The visit also included a working dinner with Norwegian and Italian business representatives. The discussions were built on a bilateral business forum held in Rome earlier this year and covered energy, maritime technology, space activities and defence-related industries.
