WINDHOEK, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Namibian government, in partnership with the Namibia-Cuba Solidarity Association, mobilized 2,449,155 Namibian dollars (approximately 150,810 U.S. dollars) in financial support for the people of Cuba, officials confirmed late Thursday.
The fundraising effort concluded following a state-hosted solidarity gala dinner held by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in Windhoek on Wednesday.
The funds were generated through ticket sales and private pledges collected at the event, the OPM said in a statement.
"We are proud Namibians today because of the outcome of the famous Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. Our support for Cuba is rooted in our shared history of solidarity and shared sacrifice. Our freedom, soaked in blood and sweat, dictates that we cannot abandon Cuba at this time," Prime Minister Tjtunga Elijah Ngurare said in the statement.
About 400 people attended the gala dinner, aimed at mobilizing financial resources in support of the people of Cuba while strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and bilateral relations between Namibia and Cuba.
The high-level event drew significant representation from top leadership, including President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice President Lucia Witbooi, and Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. They were joined by Cabinet ministers, executive directors, and delegates from state-owned enterprises and private institutions, alongside dedicated supporters of the Namibia-Cuba solidarity movement. ■
