ANKARA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Jailed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan will be given a role as a technical coordinator to oversee the group's disarmament and dissolution, a senior Turkish official said on Thursday.
Turkish Presidential Chief Advisor Mehmet Ucum told reporters in Ankara that Ocalan would serve on a newly formed state subcommittee, according to private broadcaster NTV.
The mechanism is part of a broader government framework known as the "Terror-Free Türkiye" process, in line with a landmark reintegration law for PKK militants adopted by Turkish lawmakers last August, a key step toward ending a decades-long conflict.
Ucum said the decision did not mean Ocalan would be released or granted special privileges.
"Whoever established the organization and made them use weapons is the one who will dissolve it," Ucum emphasized, according to NTV.
The PKK, which has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union.
In May 2025, the PKK announced its decision to disarm and disband following a call from its imprisoned leader Ocalan.
On Aug. 10, Türkiye's parliament approved a legal framework for the disarmament and reintegration of the PKK. ■
