When President Xi Jinping visited New Delhi for the BRICS Summit 2026, the first such visit in seven years, it was more than a diplomatic event. It was a symbol of renewal, a reminder that China and India, two civilizational giants and largest developing countries, share a responsibility to cooperate for development. In this uncertain world, development stands out as the greatest common denominator binding our nations together.
From the spread of Buddhism across the Himalayas to centuries of trade along the Silk Road, histories of the two countries are deeply connected. These ties are not just relics of the past; they remind us that cooperation is part of our shared heritage. Today, as both nations modernize, these connections gain new significance. Development serves as a bridge linking our past to our future.
The meeting between Xi and Narendra Modi in New Delhi represented a commitment to stabilizing their relationship and focusing on shared interests.
Economic engagement could be a major aspect of bilateral cooperation. China's strength in manufacturing and infrastructure aligns well with India's dynamic services sector and innovation ecosystem. Collaborations in renewable energy, digital platforms and green finance could unlock significant potential and accelerate shared prosperity. However, development goes beyond economics; it also involves investing in people. Expanding student exchanges, cultural festivals and joint research programs can help deepen trust between the two nations.
Beyond bilateral relations, the Global South views China and India as pillars of hope. In forums like the BRICS, SCO, the G20 and the United Nations, China and India can amplify the voices of developing countries. The Global South looks to China and India to demonstrate that cooperation among major developing nations is not only possible but also essential.
The vision for shared prosperity is clear. China and India must embrace development as the greatest common denominator. By cooperating in trade, technology, infrastructure and cultural exchanges, they can inspire the Global South, strengthen multipolarity and shape a fairer international order.
Xi Jinping's visit to New Delhi reminded us that civilizational ties and modern aspirations converge on one point: development. It is the bridge that connects our histories, the mission that unites our peoples, and the hope that inspires the Global South. By embracing development as the foundation of cooperation, China and India can move beyond differences, strengthen exchanges and work together to build a brighter and more inclusive future for the world.
We must recognize that what unites us is far stronger than what divides us.
