BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.41 percent to 3,875.60 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.33 percent lower at 13,409.91 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at around 1.82 trillion yuan (about 269 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.84 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Genetically modified crops, corn, as well as planting and forestry were among the top gainers, while precious metals, lead-related stocks, and electronic components saw major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.4 percent to close at 3,298.31 points Thursday.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 0.15 percent lower at 1,887.34 points. ■
