TOKYO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher on Thursday as the benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 213.25 points, or 0.33 percent, from Wednesday at 64,136.25.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, gained 32.47 points, or 0.80 percent, to finish at 4,094.19.

On the top-tier Prime Market, marine transportation, pharmaceutical, and iron and steel issues were notable gainers.

Most sectors rose as buying rotated to non-technology shares such as gaming and medical issues, which had lagged the recent AI- and chip-driven rally.

The Nikkei index briefly slipped into negative territory during the session as interest rate-sensitive issues struggled to gain upward momentum. A wait-and-see mood also lingered in the market as the Bank of Japan opened its two-day policy meeting on Thursday, with investors bracing for its interest rate decision and economic outlook, analysts said.
