ISTANBUL, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Diesel prices in Türkiye rose by another 4.68 Turkish liras (about 0.10 U.S. dollars) per liter from Thursday, pushing pump prices above 100 liras for the first time as the country faced its second major diesel price hike in two days.
The latest increase followed a rise of about 6.5 liras per liter on Tuesday, according to fuel retailer Petrol Ofisi.
Following the two consecutive hikes, diesel prices rose to about 100.3 liras per liter in Istanbul, while prices exceeded 101 liras in Ankara and Izmir. In some provinces, prices climbed above 102 liras, according to nationwide pump price data.
The successive increases came as global oil prices remained elevated amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to regional energy supplies.
Fuel stations across the country began replacing their price displays with three-digit figures ahead of the latest increase, reflecting the sharp rise in diesel prices.
Diesel prices in Türkiye have risen sharply over the past year. They stood at around 54 liras per liter in September 2025, meaning prices have increased by more than 85 percent over the period.
On Wednesday, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said the government has temporarily given up additional tax revenue through a sliding-scale fuel tax to cushion pump prices against surging global oil prices.
"While diesel exceeds 150 liras per liter in many European countries, it is hovering around 100 liras here. We have truly given up significant tax revenue to achieve this," Simsek said in a televised interview on Wednesday.
Simsek noted that keeping diesel prices temporarily contained is crucial for easing cost pressures on the country's vital agricultural and transportation sectors, which heavily influence inflation. (1 U.S. dollar = 48.68 Turkish liras) ■
