SYDNEY, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Nine people have been hospitalized, including one in a critical condition, following a three-vehicle collision in western Sydney on Sunday night.

Police said on Monday that a utility collided head-on with an SUV, which then collided with a sedan, on a highway in Cabramatta, 26 km west of central Sydney, around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday night.

The male driver of the SUV, believed to be aged in his 50s, was trapped before being freed by fire and rescue crews and taken to hospital with critical head injuries.

Four people who were in the utility, a male driver and three children, were also hospitalized, with an eight-year-old suffering facial injuries and the other two children sustaining lacerations from seatbelts.

The male driver of the sedan and three passengers, a woman and two teenage girls, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
