MADRID, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Valencia sacked coach Carlos Corberan on Sunday following Friday's 1-0 defeat to Sevilla, just over two months after he signed a new contract with the La Liga club.
Valencia confirmed the decision on its official website, saying it had "decided to end the relationship" with Corberan following a poor start to the season. He becomes the first La Liga coach to lose his job this season.
Asked about his future after Friday's defeat, Corberan said: "I cannot speak about hypothetical scenarios, but rather about turning a situation around. I am one of those responsible for reversing it, and my job is to focus on that."
"I am aware that without victories, there is no achieving our objective, and I accept the criticism and responsibility when I see the team giving its all yet failing to get a result," he added.
Friday's defeat left Valencia bottom of La Liga with just one point from a possible 15. Corberan's side failed to register a single shot on target against Sevilla.
The loss followed a 5-0 home defeat to Barcelona, after which supporters at Mestalla vented their frustration at Corberan, the players and club owner Peter Lim.
Corberan, who was born in Valencia, was appointed in December 2024 with the club battling to avoid relegation and guided the team to safety in his first season.
Valencia endured further problems during the 2025-26 campaign but recovered to finish ninth, narrowly missing out on European qualification. Corberan was subsequently rewarded with a new contract.
Valencia also announced Sunday that it had sacked sporting director Ron Gourlay. ■
