UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday expressed deep concern over the intensification, increasing complexity and evolving nature of terrorist attacks.

In a presidential statement, the council also voiced concern over the rising number of fatalities and the expanding geographic spread of terrorism, as well as the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters.

The statement was released after a Security Council meeting on terrorism, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

The council expressed deep concern over the growing use of new technologies for terrorist purposes, while recognizing that technological innovations may offer significant opportunities in the counter-terrorism domain.

It expressed particular concern over the increased use by terrorists and their supporters of the internet and other information and communications technologies for terrorist purposes.

The council also expressed concern over the increasing misuse of unmanned aerial systems by terrorists to conduct attacks against, and incursions into, critical infrastructure and soft targets or public places, and to traffic drugs and arms.

The council emphasized the need for member states to act cooperatively to prevent and counter the use of new information and communications technologies and other technologies for terrorist purposes.
