KABUL, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least four commuters died and six others sustained injuries when two vehicles collided in northern Afghanistan's Balkh province on Friday, the provincial police office said in a statement.
The crash took place after a truck struck an oncoming high-speed vehicle on the Hairatan dual carriageway, along the highway linking the capital, Kabul, to Balkh province, killing four passengers on the spot and injuring six others, said the statement.
Preliminary investigations indicate that reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations were the primary reasons behind the crash, it added.
Road accidents continue to rank among the leading causes of mortality in Afghanistan, driven by widespread reckless driving, overcrowded vehicles, poorly maintained roadways, and insufficient traffic infrastructure across the war-ravaged country. ■
