TASHKENT, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan is accelerating the implementation of six waste-to-energy projects with a total investment of 933 million U.S. dollars, all being carried out in cooperation with Chinese companies, the president's press service said in a release Thursday.
The projects, planned for implementation in 2026-2027, are located in the Kashkadarya, Samarkand, Tashkent, Andijan, Fergana and Namangan regions. The plants in the Kashkadarya and Samarkand regions are scheduled to be commissioned in 2026, while facilities in the other regions will become operational in 2027.
Once fully operational, the facilities will process 3.6 million tons of municipal solid waste annually and generate 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. They will create 500 new jobs, save 158 million cubic meters of natural gas, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 316,000 tons.
The projects are expected to accelerate the country's transition toward a "zero waste" model, reduce pressure on landfills and improve the overall environmental situation. ■
