GENEVA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- China called on all countries to revitalize global cooperation and accelerate the improvement of global human rights governance under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at a UN panel discussion here Wednesday.
This meeting was held on the sidelines of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights in a bid to address inequalities. Jia Guide, China's permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, delivered a keynote speech.
Amid the ongoing UN fiscal strains, resource allocation for economic, social and cultural rights remains inadequate, so the international community should give these rights higher priority on the multilateral human rights agenda, Jia said.
He called on all countries to reinvigorate global cooperation, fulfill their obligations under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, accelerate the improvement of global human rights governance, attach greater importance to and support the needs of developing countries, support the role of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and provide more capacity-building and technical assistance through the Knowledge Hub for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
The panel was held pursuant to the Human Rights Council resolution on promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights in the context of addressing inequalities, which was sponsored by China.
The Knowledge Hub for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, established by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as mandated by the resolution, has become the primary UN platform for technical assistance and capacity-building in the field of economic, social and cultural rights. ■
