SHANGHAI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's comprehensive scientific and technological innovation has seen improvements over the past year, with the national sci-tech innovation environment, input, output and high-tech industries maintaining growth, according to the latest evaluation report on China's regional innovation on Friday.
The evaluation report, unveiled by the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED) during the 2026 Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai, was conducted across 31 provincial-level regions nationwide.
The regions were divided into three tiers, with six provincial-level regions including Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Tianjin in the first tier, leading the list in innovation strength.
Beijing's research and experimental development (R&D) expenditure intensity reached 6.58 percent, ranking first nationwide, while its high-tech industry climbed to the top spot.
An industrial innovation chain featuring complementary strengths among Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei is gradually taking shape, the report noted.
Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui are joining forces in collaborative research, opening up channels for the transformation of sci-tech achievements, fostering new quality productive forces, and building an open innovation ecosystem that is globally competitive.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area showed strong innovation momentum among enterprises.
The report will serve as an important decision-making reference for local governments in optimizing sci-tech policies and improving the layout of regional innovation, said Liu Dongmei, head of the CASTED.
The 2026 Pujiang Innovation Forum is scheduled to be held in Shanghai from Sept. 11 to 14. This year's forum aims to build a high-level international platform for sci-tech innovation exchanges and cooperation. ■
