WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. forces on Tuesday struck several targets, including Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island and Jask, a coastal county in southern Iran, multiple U.S. media outlets reported, citing U.S. officials.

The targets included Iranian crude oil tankers that the U.S. military sought to sink or disable, a U.S. official told Fox News.

The strikes were part of the "pressure campaign" against the Iranian economy, which relies heavily on crude oil exports, the official was quoted as saying.

The U.S. military struck the Iranian tankers linked to the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) in response to attempted missile attacks on a U.S. Navy warship, said a CNN report, citing U.S. officials.

Following the attacks, Ali Abdollahi, chief commander of Iran's main military command Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, warned that any aggression against Iranian tankers would lead to attacks on U.S. bases in the West Asia region, according to Sepah News.
