YANGON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar held ceremonies in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon on Monday to mark the 2026 International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, the state-owned daily The Mirror reported on Tuesday.
At the ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Hsan Oo said efforts to improve air quality would help protect public health, enhance productivity, support economic development and reduce losses caused by climate change, the report said.
Myanmar is working with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states to reduce fire hotspots, control transboundary haze pollution and improve air quality, the minister said.
He added that the ministry is monitoring and measuring air quality nationwide while conducting public information and awareness-raising activities, the report said.
The United Nations General Assembly designated Sept. 7 as the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies in 2019, with the first observance held in 2020, to raise public awareness and promote actions to improve air quality. ■
