RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Forward Rene scored in the second half as Vitoria edged to a 1-0 home win over Gremio in Brazil's Serie A on Monday.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Rene rose highest to send a thumping header past goalkeeper Weverton following Mateus Silva's delivery from a corner.
Gremio controlled 51 percent of possession and had four shots on target but couldn't find a way past Vitoria goalkeeper Lucas Arcanjo.
The result leaves Vitoria 11th in Brazil's 20-team Serie A standings with 32 points from 26 outings.
Gremio is 15th, four points further back and only three points clear of the relegation zone with 13 games remaining in the season. ■
