JERUSALEM, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Israel has deployed fiber-optic cable dedicated entirely to seismology in the Dead Sea, the Geological Survey of Israel, a national research institution, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The 55-km cable was laid directly on the seabed in July as part of a new seismic monitoring project, installed in a zigzag pattern across the northern basin.
Using distributed acoustic sensing technology, the fiber can detect tiny vibrations and movements, effectively turning the cable into a large network of seismic sensors.
The project aims to improve scientists' understanding of the Dead Sea Transform, a major fault system that runs through the region and has produced powerful earthquakes in the past.
The researchers will use the system to detect small earthquakes and map previously unknown active faults beneath the seabed, according to the statement. ■
