BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange reserves totaled 3.4383 trillion U.S. dollars at the end of August 2026, up by 19.5 billion U.S. dollars, or 0.57 percent, compared to the end of July, official data showed Monday.

The combined effects of currency translation and asset price changes led to the increase in China's foreign exchange reserves in August, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange said in a statement.

The statement also noted that China's economy has remained generally stable and made solid progress, with its resilience and vitality supporting the stability of the country's foreign exchange reserves.

While commenting on the latest data, Wen Bin, chief economist at China Minsheng Bank, said that the rise in China's foreign exchange reserves last month came as the U.S. dollar index fell 0.5 percent in August to 99.4, with the dollar's weakness contributing to a positive valuation effect on China's foreign exchange reserves.

He said that China's exports are also expected to maintain strong resilience going forward, which will continuously consolidate the foundation of China's balance of payments. He explained that the global manufacturing upswing driven by AI-related capital expenditure is set to continue, providing a strong impetus for export growth.

Meanwhile, various foreign trade business entities are steadily expanding into diversified overseas markets, constantly tapping into new drivers of trade growth, he noted.

China's foreign trade sustained steady growth momentum in July, buoyed by robust exports of innovative and high-tech products. The General Administration of Customs is scheduled to release the latest foreign trade data for August on Tuesday.
