BELGRADE, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Main Board of Serbia's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) unanimously decided on Saturday to nominate President Aleksandar Vucic as the party's lead candidate and candidate for prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary election.

Vucic said at the session that he will step down as president after completing his scheduled state activities and foreign visits, and then run in the parliamentary election.

Vucic said the SNS will campaign through direct contact with voters and social media, and plans to hold four major rallies in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis and Kragujevac. He also said that, if the SNS wins, the new government will be streamlined with a prime minister and no more than 12 ministers.

Vucic said on Sept. 4 that Serbia would hold a snap parliamentary election soon and that the election date would be announced no later than the morning of Sept. 10. He previously said on Aug. 14 that Serbia could hold parliamentary elections in October or November this year.

Vucic served as Serbia's prime minister from 2014 to 2017 before being elected president in 2017. He was re-elected in 2022. His current presidential term is due to end in May 2027. Under Serbia's Constitution, the president may serve a maximum of two terms.
