DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania plans to undertake major reforms in its education sector, including building more than 16,000 classrooms and ensuring every village has a secondary school, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said on Saturday.
Nchemba made the remarks while addressing residents of Bahi District in Dodoma Region during a working visit to inspect development projects and hear public concerns.
He said the government's decision to extend compulsory education to Form Four would create significant demand for classrooms, laboratories and libraries.
"When we say compulsory education will extend to Form Four, it means every village should have a secondary school," the prime minister said, adding that the country would need more than 16,000 classrooms and about 8,000 laboratories.
Stressing that the government will not tolerate learning under trees or in overcrowded conditions, Nchemba underscored the urgency of early preparations to accommodate the upcoming surge in student enrollment. ■
