SAO TOME, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Carlos Vila Nova was sworn in on Thursday as president of Sao Tome and Principe for a second five-year term.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the country's National Assembly and attended by heads of state and senior government officials from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Portugal, Mozambique and other countries.
Vila Nova pledged to abide by and uphold the Constitution and laws, defend national independence, and promote the economic, social and cultural progress of the Sao Tomean people.
Sao Tome and Principe held its presidential election on July 19. Vila Nova won reelection in the first round with 55.88 percent of the vote. ■
