TOKYO, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher on Friday, lifted by buybacks in heavyweight shares after the recent rise in bond yields leveled off.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 806.46 points, or 1.26 percent, from Thursday at 65,020.94.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 1.19 points, or 0.03 percent, higher at 4,103.23.

On the top-tier Prime Market, information and communication, securities house, and nonferrous metal issues were notable gainers.

The yen's sharp appreciation against the U.S. dollar and volatile currency swings weighed on the stocks, with more than half of the market's sectors declining, including automaker shares, which tend to be vulnerable to a stronger yen, analysts said.

However, heavyweight shares that had recently come under selling pressure due to overvaluation concerns were bought back, helping lift the Nikkei. SoftBank Group, which tracked gains in software shares on Wall Street overnight, and Fast Retailing, which rebounded after recent selling pressure, were among the notable contributors.
