SYDNEY, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- A boy has been charged after a teenager's hand was severed in a stabbing attack in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Police said that emergency services were called to reports of concern for welfare at a park in the inner-southern Sydney suburb of Redfern around 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday and arrived to find a 17-year-old boy with a severed hand.

He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Officers were told that the 17-year-old had been assaulted by another boy with a knife.

Police commenced an investigation and arrested a 15-year-old boy after midnight.

The 15-year-old was taken to a nearby police station and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and with breaching bail conditions for previous charges.

He was refused bail for the new offenses and will make an initial children's court appearance on Thursday.
