COLOMBO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka imported 316,000 vehicles during the first six months of the year, generating 512.55 billion Sri Lankan rupees (1.56 billion U.S. dollars) in tax revenue, local media outlet Ada Derana reported Thursday.
Motor vehicle imports accounted for 386.73 billion rupees of that amount, representing the largest share of revenue generated from imported vehicles.
Within the vehicle segment, petrol-powered cars with engine capacities below 1,000 cc produced the highest Customs revenue. The category generated 137.4 billion rupees, equivalent to 9.96 percent of total Customs revenue during the period.
The figures were presented during a review of Sri Lanka Customs' operations and revenue performance by the Parliamentary Committee on Ways and Means.
Sri Lanka Customs collected 1.38 trillion rupees in revenue during the first half of 2026, exceeding its expected collection of 1.06 trillion rupees for the period, officials told a parliamentary committee.
The revenue recorded by June 30 amounted to 130 percent of the target, with customs officials saying monthly collections remained above expectations throughout the year. Revenue was also higher than in the corresponding months of 2025. ■
